Fiji’s prime minister has told a gathering of Pacific women parliamentarians that violence against women is unacceptable.
Frank Bainimarama, who led a military coup in 2006, made the statement to the Pacific Women’s Parliamentary Partnerships Forum in Suva.
It’s being attended by 51 delegates from the region, including 11 men.
Australia’s ambassador for women and girls, Natasha Stott-Despoja, is one of the 18 Australians at the meeting, and says it’s good for women MPs to get together on important topics like domestic violence.
But first, Fiji’s prime minister told the delegates that the Pacific is failing to beat the challenge of domestic violence.
