Brisbane beauty and law student Tanya Bali represents Australia in Miss United Nations pageant

brisbane butyTwenty-year-old Tanya Bali knows she doesn’t fit the stick-thin image of Miss Universe but that’s not stopping her from representing Australia at the Miss United Nations pageant this week.

The law student from Westlake who was born in Chandigarh, India, was recently crowned Miss India Australia and is currently in Jamaica competing in the finals of the United Nations Pageant.

Ms Bali said she only recently entered the pageant scene and was amazed to be crowned Miss India Australia.

“I have always been into singing and acting but not so much pageants,” she said.

“I wasn’t one of the skinniest girls in the competition so I think it just shows you don’t have to be stick-thin to win.”

The third-year Griffith University student said it was “eye opening” how much work went into the event.”

“It was a lot of work and very exhausting,” she said.

“It’s a lot more than just getting dressed up.”

Ms Bali, who re-wore her formal dress in the evening wear section of the competition, said she had always been confident and wasn’t too nervous during the contest.

She said she was determined to finish her law degree but would be open to taking a chance in the future.

“It’s shown me that maybe I can succeed in the entertainment industry,” she said.

“I’ll take the chance and see where this leads me.”

The United Nations Pageant runs until July 19 and aims to identify and showcase the world’s best tourism-cause ambassadors.
