Over 3000 civilians had been killed in the past day with hundreds dying with every hour of shelling, a LTTE spokesperson told Channel 4.
The spokesperson warned that at least 25,000 Tamil civilians remained in the area and declared that the LTTE were ready to lay down their arms to stop further civilian death.
A United Nations spokesman in Sri Lanka said that there could be between 30,000-80,000 civilians left in the warzone.
“As far as we understand, there are some 20,000 who have come out since Thursday, and according to UN estimates, there are some 30,000 – 80,000 people still inside the combat zone. It is a tiny area of land, perhaps a third the size of Central Park. There is obviously a very bitter battle being fought over the area at this moment. We expect that there would be a large number of killed and wounded,” said Gorden Weiss.
The Sri Lankan Human Rights Minister, Mahinda Samarasinghe, announced that all Tamil civilians had been rescued from the No Fire Zone. The Military spokesperson, Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara, further said that all civilians had either fled the war-zone or been rescued.
