Diwali celebrations at the Australian high commission in Delhi

Australian-High-Commissioner-Patrick-Suckling-and-his-wife-Natalie-DaalderA perfect mix of Australia and Bollywood summed up the daytime Diwali celebrations at the Australian high commission on Friday, which proved that you don’t need candles or crackers to have a blast.

The day featured firangs doing desi dance moves, acting like Bollywood buffs, looking into each other’s eyes while serenading their partners, a good amount of ruthna manana aur phir maan jaana, as they re-enacted scenes from Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani – the theme of this year’s Diwali party. And the reason behind this Bollywood-packed celebration? The staff of the high commission revealed, “Jab tak budhapa nahin aata, thodi badtameezi hi kar lete hain.”

While four-five couples from the staff enacted Bunny and Naina’s love story at the event, our favourite Bunny was Patrick Suckling, Australia’s high commissioner to India, with his wife Natalie Daalder playing Naina. When Bunny left because they never had a liquor shop While some groups which performed the scenes from the film delivered their dialogues in Hindi, Patrick translated them into English. Remember the scene from the film where Bunny tells his friends that he was leaving? At the Australian High Commissioner’s residence, it played out a little differently. ‘Bunny’ disclosed, “Why look so shocked? I wanna travel the world. I wanna see everything.” A shocked Avi (played by another Australian official) replied, “I can’t believe you are leaving, you should have told us man! What about our plans? What about our English wine shop?” A disappointed ‘Bunny’ remarked, “English wine shop? We never had a liquor shop.” And then he left. They got married in India and returned to the oz High Commission The climax of the performance came during the scene where Bunny proposed to Naina. “Bunny, what are you doing here? Aren’t you going?” Natalie asked. And our Bunny replied, “Haar cheez ka saahi samay hota hai aur aaj humara samay hai, toh Naina tum mujhse shaadi karogi?” After Naina nodded, the elated Bunny replied, “Shabaash!”
