{"id":371,"date":"2015-05-05T13:53:20","date_gmt":"2015-05-05T13:53:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.southasiantimes.com.au\/?p=371"},"modified":"2015-05-06T04:00:48","modified_gmt":"2015-05-06T04:00:48","slug":"australia-foreign-affairs-department-concerned-over-evidence-of-torture-in-sri-lanka","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.southasiantimes.com.au\/?p=371","title":{"rendered":"Australia Foreign Affairs Department concerned over evidence of torture in Sri Lanka"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/southasiantimes.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Srilanka-feature.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/southasiantimes.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Srilanka-feature-300x128.jpg\" alt=\"Srilanka-feature\" width=\"300\" height=\"128\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-372\" srcset=\"http:\/\/southasiantimes.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Srilanka-feature-300x128.jpg 300w, http:\/\/southasiantimes.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Srilanka-feature.jpg 560w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs (DFAT) has expressed concern over the evidence of torture by Sri Lanka\u2019s security forces working in cooperation with the Australian Federal Police (AFP), reports Colombo Mirror.<\/p>\n<p>An investigation by ABC news, found that two former asylum seekers that were deported form Australia in 2009 were abused by members of Sri Lanka\u2019s Central Investigation Department (CID) in the presence of an Australian Federal Police officer in Sri Lanka.<\/p>\n<p>The victims\u2019 lawyer, Lakshan Dias, said that CID officers beat men with wooden planks and threatened to rape their family members.<\/p>\n<p>One of the victims, aged 31, Sumith Mendis, told reporters, <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was tortured. I was unable to pass urine for two days. I had unbearable pain in my body.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The AFP confirmed that an officer was in the building at CID building at the time of the event but denies that it witnessed the abuse. <\/p>\n<p>Speaking to ABC news, an AFP spokesperson said, <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe AFP can confirm records indicate an AFP officer was present in the building on th day the offence was alleged to occur.
