This made history, with the Indian team the first from Asia to win a series on Australian soil.<\/p>\n

India first toured Australia in 1947-48 and skipper Virat Kohli was clearly delighted to be the man to lead his country to a breakthrough victory Down Under, saying it was “by far” the greatest achievement of his cricket career.<\/p>\n

“Having been to this country three times and to understand what we’ve done has never been done, I feel very proud,” he said.<\/p>\n

“It gives us a new identity as an Indian team going forward. I think we can inspire kids to play cricket for their country. What we have achieved is something we can be very proud of.”Cheteshwar Pujara was named player of the match and player of the series for his 521 runs at an average of 74.42 from a mammoth 1,258 balls faced.<\/p>\n

Aside from their win in Perth, the Australian team has struggled throughout the series, particularly with the bat, as top scorer Marcus Harris (258) had less than half Pujara’s total for the series.<\/p>\n

Australia’s second innings in Sydney was cut short on 0-6, after the hosts were made to follow on when they made just 300 in their first dig, in response to India’s 7-622 declared.<\/p>\n

Batting has been the real Achilles heel for the home side, with Australia able to pass 300 runs just twice in eight innings.<\/p>\n

Tim Paine and his men now have just over a fortnight to get ready for their two-Test series against Sri Lanka, which begins on January 24 at the Gabba.<\/p>\n

“There’s been some doom and gloom about this group, but there is talent in the team and some that are not playing at the moment,” Paine said, referencing banned duo Steve Smith and David Warner.<\/p>\n

“It is great for [the new players] to get experience to play against probably the best bowling attack in the world.<\/p>\n

“We have another series with Sri Lanka coming up [and] any games they can play at international level is a positive for them.”
