Nepal\u2019s parliament passed the new constitution on Wednesday, weeks after political leaders reached a historic agreement to create a federal state following an natural disaster that killed nearly 9,000 people.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe protesting parties<\/strong> see the current design of federal demarcation plan in the new constitution as a way to minimize their demographic power, and lessen their political<\/strong> bargaining capacity\u201d, said Dipendra Jha, a lawyer at the Supreme Court and a Madhesi practicing in Kathmandu.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have to lead the Nepalese delegation to New York, as prime minister Koirala has important task of holding talks with the agitating Madhesi parties at ho<\/p>\n

Sections like Madheshis, Tharus, pro-Hindu and breakaway faction of UCPN (Maoist) have opposed the constitution. \u201cIt is hoped that Nepal<\/strong> will seize the opportunity to realise national unity, stability and development\u201d, he said at a regular press briefing on Monday. \u201cThe Constitution is the common document of all of us to protect our freedom, independence, geographic integrity, and sovereignty in people<\/strong>\u201c.<\/p>\n

Observing features of the Nepal Constitution, Karat said it has enunciated fundamental rights of citizens which are more wide-ranging than those provided vis-a-vis in Indian Constitution.<\/p>\n

The constitution was adopted against the backdrop of violence<\/strong>, as the country\u2019s southern plains remained crippled under over a month of strikes, in which about 40 people have already been killed.<\/p>\n

India yesterday expressed concern over the escalating tension and violence in the Terai region and called its envoy to Nepal, Ranjit Rae, to New Delhi for consultations. After signing the members<\/strong> of the Constituent Assembly<\/strong> of Nepal welcomed pats tables.<\/p>\n

Prime Minister Sushil Koirala of the Nepali Congress, addressing the rally, said Nepal was willing to move ahead by maintaining harmonious relations with both India and China for its dream to be a prosperous and stable nation.<\/p>\n

As reported by IBN<\/em>, the constitution will identify seven specific provinces within the South Asian country. Police said clashes between officers and protesters on Sunday left one demonstrator dead near Birgunj town in southern Nepal.<\/p>\n
