{"id":839,"date":"2015-08-25T01:49:11","date_gmt":"2015-08-25T01:49:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.southasiantimes.com.au\/?p=839"},"modified":"2015-08-26T03:59:44","modified_gmt":"2015-08-26T03:59:44","slug":"new-australia-singapore-research-centre-opens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.southasiantimes.com.au\/?p=839","title":{"rendered":"New Australia-Singapore Research Centre Opens"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/southasiantimes.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/penkal.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-840\" src=\"http:\/\/southasiantimes.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/penkal-300x201.png\" alt=\"penkal\" width=\"300\" height=\"201\" srcset=\"http:\/\/southasiantimes.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/penkal-300x201.png 300w, http:\/\/southasiantimes.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/penkal.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The head of Singapore\u2019s civil service, Peter Ong, has launched a new research centre, which will feed into Singapore\u2019s and Australia\u2019s\u00a0growth policies.<\/p>\n<p>The Asia Growth Research Centre, based at the Ngee Ann-Adelaide Education Centre \u2013 a Singapore-based Adelaide University campus \u2013\u00a0opened on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Ong, who is also permanent secretary at Singapore\u2019s finance ministry, said the new centre would seek to answer the question: \u201cWhat will drive growth in Asia and in Singapore?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Its work will focus on services, skills and connectivity as future drivers of growh and \u201cwill help us answer the challenge of maintaining our competitiveness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-2050 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.globalgovernmentforum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/DSC_1926-e1440410001838.jpg\" alt=\"The Hon. Jay Weatherill (premier, South Australia) \" width=\"600\" height=\"428\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Ong also said the centre will help Singapore and Australia \u201cexplore new opportunities\u201d offered by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) \u2013 a political and economic organisation of ten Southeast Asian countries.<\/p>\n<p>Experts estimate ASEAN could become the fourth-largest single market in the world by 2030, after the US, China, and EU.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-2049 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.globalgovernmentforum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/DSC_1941-e1440409976470.jpg\" alt=\"Mr Peter Ong (head of civil service, Prime Minister\u2019s Office, Singapore) and the Hon. Jay Weatherill (premier, South Australia) \" width=\"600\" height=\"401\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Ong said that ASEAN, which is currently the world\u2019s seventh\u2013largest single market, would \u201covertake economies such as the EU to become Singapore\u2019s largest final demand market, particularly for services exports.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The launch was also attended by the Australian high commissioner to Singapore, Philip Green; South Australia\u2019s premier Jay Weatherill; vice-chancellor and president of Adelaide University Professor Warren Bebbington and the university\u2019s executive dean of the Faculty of the Professions, Professor Christopher Findlay.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-2047 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.globalgovernmentforum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/DSC_1952-e1440410021723.jpg\" alt=\"From left: Professor Christopher Findlay (executive dean, Faculty of the Professions, University of Adelaide), Mr Peter Ong (head of civil service, Prime Minister\u2019s Office, Singapore), the Hon. Jay Weatherill (premier, South Australia), Professor Warren Bebbington (vice-chancellor and president, University of Adelaide), and Philip Green (Australian high commissioner to Singapore).\" width=\"600\" height=\"401\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Speaking to <em>Global Government Forum<\/em> after the launch, Findlay said the research centre would set up a range of communications channels to inform policy decisions of both the Australian and the Singaporean government.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe see the work being the result of a two-way communication between the centre as well as civil servants in Australia and Singapore,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Asked which departments the centre expects to work with primarily, he said: \u201cAny officials dealing with growth issues, so civil servants from the manpower ministry; anyone working on workforce development, technology, infrastructure \u2013 just about every ministry has a dimension of interest.
