{"id":737,"date":"2015-07-30T23:44:33","date_gmt":"2015-07-30T23:44:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.southasiantimes.com.au\/?p=737"},"modified":"2015-08-02T03:58:08","modified_gmt":"2015-08-02T03:58:08","slug":"itjp-report-highlights-structural-genocide-against-tamils-under-complete-impunity-says-australian-senator","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.southasiantimes.com.au\/?p=737","title":{"rendered":"ITJP report highlights structural genocide against Tamils under complete impunity says Australian senator"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/southasiantimes.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/lee.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-739\" src=\"http:\/\/southasiantimes.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/lee.png\" alt=\"lee\" width=\"299\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"http:\/\/southasiantimes.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/lee.png 299w, http:\/\/southasiantimes.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/lee-200x113.png 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 299px) 100vw, 299px\" \/><\/a>The Australian Greens Senator for New South Wales Lee Rhiannon, described the findings of the International Truth &amp; Justice Project (ITJP) report into Sri Lanka as a \u201chorrifying\u201d account of ongoing torture against Tamils \u201cunder complete impunity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a media release that called for accountability and an independent international war crimes investigation and action to stop the \u201con going structural genocide\u201d in Sri Lanka, Ms Rhiannon said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe newly documented evidence of torture, sexual violence and harassment of Tamils by officials in Sri Lanka under complete impunity and as recently as July 2015, is horrifying.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis new evidence confirms what we have already known &#8211; systematic and widespread crimes against humanity, sexual violence and intimidation have not ceased with the change of government, now under Maithripala Sirisena.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe men in the former Sri Lankan government who committed war crimes and crimes against humanity are under impunity and some are still holding official positions. They must be held accountable for their crimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven though Australia will continue to maintain its silence against Sri Lanka\u2019s atrocities, it is so crucial the international community does not drop their support for an independent international war crimes investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStructural genocide in Sri Lanka continues.
