Ethereum, another leading cryptocurrency, was down 9%.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_C743213E-8306-B6F6-E997-17B33EBDA5E3\">The agencies said that China would develop &#8220;new systems&#8221; to counter risks posed by cryptocurrencies. China will gradually start shutting down crypto mining operations, and no new mining projects will be permitted, the National Development and Reform Commission said in a separate statement.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__read-all\">\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_928D4229-59CD-3C68-805F-178DFF1ABA19\">The announcements are the latest in a series of tough measures from China on cryptocurrencies.<\/div>\n<div data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_928D4229-59CD-3C68-805F-178DFF1ABA19\"><\/div>\n<div data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_928D4229-59CD-3C68-805F-178DFF1ABA19\">In May, Chinese Vice Premier Liu He told a group of finance officials that the government would &#8220;clamp down on bitcoin mining and trading activity&#8221; as part of its goal to achieve financial stability. And finance and banking watchdogs said that financial institutions and payment companies should not participate in any transactions related to cryptocurrency, nor should they provide crypto-related services to their clients.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_928D4229-59CD-3C68-805F-178DFF1ABA19\"><\/div>\n<div data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_F7823885-BBAA-131B-EC75-17B15714244A\">\n<div data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_928D4229-59CD-3C68-805F-178DFF1ABA19\">\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_568B60F0-95F8-63E4-39A5-1799AB39E30C\">The measures aren&#8217;t just about curtailing financial risk. The computers needed for\u00a0bitcoin mining\u00a0eat up a ton of computing power and electricity, raising concerns about the cost to the environment.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_40AEB3BA-82B4-5BE7-9552-179D1D1AE63B\">China was on track to generate more than 130 million metric tons of carbon emissions by 2024, according to a Nature Communications study. That&#8217;s more than the total annual carbon emissions output from the Czech Republic and Qatar in 2016.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_62048560-9800-F44E-1750-179D1D1DB806\">That kind of output is also disastrous for China&#8217;s ambitious climate plans.
