This is how it began and what it left behind"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"_1HzXw\"><a href=\"http:\/\/southasiantimes.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/download-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2058\" src=\"http:\/\/southasiantimes.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/download-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"275\" height=\"183\" \/><\/a>With American and NATO troops having all but departed Afghanistan after 20 years of war, the country is still riven by internal conflict.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1HzXw\">The United States descended on Afghanistan and its Taliban government in 2001 in the wake of the 9\/11 attacks by Al Qaeda, which had sought sanctuary in the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1HzXw\">Now at the end of the war, this is a look back at how it\u00a0began, the complications that arose,<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>and how it came to an ignominious end.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"_2O2Ne _2El7j _3XvRm _3qPMD _2rdcP _2Od9e _582YK _2eB4R _3Z8IO\" data-component=\"Heading\">September 11, the trigger<\/h4>\n<p class=\"_1HzXw\">On October 7, 2001 \u2013\u00a0less than a month after the September 11 attacks that killed about 3,000 people in the US \u2013 then-president George W\u00a0Bush launched\u00a0Operation Enduring Freedom\u00a0in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1HzXw\">The ruling Islamist Taliban had been sheltering Osama bin Laden and his Al Qaeda movement, which carried out the attacks in the US.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1HzXw\">The operation opened\u00a0a military front in the US &#8220;war on terrorism&#8221;
