{"id":1301,"date":"2016-01-05T02:16:01","date_gmt":"2016-01-05T02:16:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.southasiantimes.com.au\/?p=1301"},"modified":"2016-01-10T04:18:48","modified_gmt":"2016-01-10T04:18:48","slug":"malaysia-airlines-lifts-decried-bag-ban","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.southasiantimes.com.au\/?p=1301","title":{"rendered":"Malaysia Airlines lifts decried bag ban"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"yui_3_9_1_1_1452399334707_608\"><a href=\"http:\/\/southasiantimes.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/bag.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1302\" src=\"http:\/\/southasiantimes.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/bag-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"bag\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"http:\/\/southasiantimes.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/bag-300x169.jpg 300w, http:\/\/southasiantimes.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/bag-200x113.jpg 200w, http:\/\/southasiantimes.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/bag.jpg 512w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Malaysia Airlines has lifted a much-criticised ban on checking in baggage on flights to Paris and Amsterdam, a day after limiting bags to lighten the plane and save fuel.<\/p>\n<p>The airline had banned check-in baggage for Tuesday and Wednesday flights to the two European cities due to &#8220;unseasonably strong headwinds&#8221; on a longer flight path it was taking.<\/p>\n<p>Passengers slammed the airline on social media and suggested it could have reduced the number of passengers or refused to carry freight instead.<\/p>\n<p>The airline told The Associated Press that it &#8220;uniquely has been using a routing (to Europe) via Egypt, which has been up to two hours longer than other carriers&#8221; for safety reasons.<\/p>\n<p>Headwinds over the past four days exceeded 200 knots, which can burn up to 15 per cent more fuel on its Boeing 777-200 aircraft, it said.<\/p>\n<p>It lifted the ban less than 24 hours after imposing it after concluding it could take a shorter route.<\/p>\n<p>The airline told AP it does a daily risk assessment to determine the most optimum route for flights and is currently taking &#8220;a more northerly route&#8221;.
